Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Get treated like family every time we eat here! It's all run by family from Mexico and the food is authentic. If you know your Mexican food then the numbered specials are for everyone else! I always order something different and I'm usually not disappointed. The only negative thing I have to say is sometimes they go a little overboard with the cheese. Of course they are

Great place. We go there at least once a month - I always get the chicken fajitas and they are tasty
(5)Kenzie F.
I love going here, because it is easily the most authentic Mexican we have in the area. I have never had a bad dish from here and the service is quite friendly. I would definitely recommend it. The only reason I gve it 4 stars is that there have been a couple times where we've had to wait a pretty long time for someone to come back to our table to refill drinks or bring the check. Not every time at all, but it was enough to frustrate me. Regardless I will continue to visit this restaurant and hope they don't go anywhere any time soon!

Excellent prices for lunch. Best mexican food in the area to my knowledge.
(4)Joseph P.
Nice people, nice clean restaurant, cool decorations, very good food, a good place to go.
(5)Max W.
As a California native I actually know what good Mexican food is like, and surprisingly this place passes the test! The staff has always been very courteous and the quality of their food remains constant. My only complaint is that the cops eat here a bit too frequently! :)
(4)Matthieu K.
Considering this place is in Charlestown, WV ... it's acceptable Tex-Mex. My palate can pick a few items they serve out of a line-up ... meaning some of their wares DO come straight out of a can/jar from Costco. But so what? I found the atmosphere to be fun and the food to be much better than average AND, again ... it's in WV. Beats TacoB3ll any day, by a long shot. Enough said. Try it, you'll probably like it.

It's no surprise that the people of Charlestown, West Virginia have no clue what good Mexican food is. If you like incredibly bland food coupled with non existent service, then this is definitely your place. Personally, I was so disappointed by what Yelpers consider a four star restaurant that I simply can't say enough bad things about this place. Service was terrible. Flat out non existent. We had not one, but two servers all but up our asses within minutes of sitting down asking what we wanted to eat. As this was our first time there, and the menu is fairly large, we didn't know what we wanted right away. When we did place our order, service came to a halt. Nobody came to the table with the exception of once to bring the food, and a second when we flagged someone down for the check. No refills of drinks were offered, and nobody came to check on us in the interim. The food itself is the worst offender. No flavor at all. No hint of Mexican spices or even the grilled flavor to the chicken as advertised on the menu for what we ordered. Definitely some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had in my life. I could have made better food at home. Heck, even Taco Bell utilizes more spices in their food than this place. Unless you're so clueless that you can't distinguish Mexican food from the flavor of licking a tree, don't waste your time with this place at all.

Quality food and service during a busy lunch hour. Food came fast and correct. Manger even stopped by the table to ask how everything was. Best service I've had in Charles Town.
(5)Christopher B.
Ok, I'm not going to be too critical of the place because the food was good...but I've definetely had better. I'm from Southern West Virginia and in my home town, our mexican places top this one for sure. I've also traveled out west to Arizona, where nothing here could ever compare to over there. Bottom line, food was good but not great, it lacked real flavor and spices. Service was good, but could be a tad faster. The beer was good though. It's an average place, not one of my top go to places though.
(3)Sam C.
Rather mediocre food, but the margaritas are big. Order the large, and you won't care! If you don't have the benefit of the big margarita, head over to Casa Gonzalez 2 in Ranson, which is close by and has much better food!

Sweetie and I were visiting friends in the area. There was quite a backyard gathering going with lots of kids. Some of us were hungry, others not so it was decided that my girlfriend and I would run after pizza for the kids and "dinners" for the adults that wanted one. She suggested Mi Degollado for the adult dinners. We arrived, the decor is "typical" mexi, w/ lots of color. Furniture was pretty basic, church social basic, but we were not staying long. Placed our orders then headed over to pick up pizza. When we got back, our orders were ready and we headed to the house. Back at the Ranch - 4 adults dug into their "to-go" dinners. The general consensus is that the food was A-OK tasty, nothing to right home to AZ about, but good.
(3)Kira G.
The staff is always extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. The portions are large and well priced. Every dish we've tried is fantastic.
(5)Laurence W.
I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting from a Mexican restaurant in a strip mall, but here's what I can report: they may very well serve last week's guacamole, use mole sauce from a jar and store-bought flour tortillas, but damned if they don't know how to cook a chicken breast to perfection. Unfortunately, a great chicken breast does not equal great Mexican food, so I guess I'll save my praise for another spot...
(3)Tony C.
I want to say I was very happy, but I just wasn't. The decor was dredged color-laden booths mixed with standard tables & chairs. It was noisy and somewhat crowded, although I was easily able to chat with my wife. The menu was busy, but I had a good selection of items. Overall the food was okay, but tasted "off the shelf" and not fresh. For a quick lunch meal, it was fine, though. I would go back, but would look at other local selections first.
(3)Brittany S.
The staff are wonderful! Best Mexican restaurant in the area! Prices are reasonable as well.
(5)J H.
I went to lunch with a few coworkers. I had the lunch carnitas and they were very good. The meat was so tender that I didn't need a knife. I enjoyed the beans and rice that came with the meal, as well as the fresh hot tortillas (flour, my favorite). The waitress was attentive and polite. She did a good job of attending to our needs, but not imposing. One of my coworkers had the dinner carnitas and I don't know the cost difference, but the lunch portion was almost as big as the dinner portion. The lunch portion was more than enough to fill me up.
(4)Shawn M.
I like some meals better than others her, but I can honestly say I have never had a bad one. Authentic cuisine in an unexpected location!
(5)Phil D.
We were only in the area for 1 night, found this place on Yelp. Food was excellent, when we arrived staff was inviting and friendly. Our waiter was great. I had 2 beef burritos plus a beef taco and my wife had a beef enchilada. All was very good food. Also, the guacamole was the best. Next time we are near Harpers Ferry, we will visit this restaurant again.
(5)Kent K.
We are regulars at this location. Very good food and great service. Once you order, your food arrives lightning fast. It is very authentic and the guacamole is great as well. The margaritas are top notch and will not disappoint. Highly recommend.
(5)Sarah K.
Very friendly staff. Good chips and salsa. Reasonable prices. I had the mole poblano and it is some of the better mole sauce I have had. Highly recommend it. My friend got one of the combo plates with chile rellenos, taco and (I forget the third item) but the important thing was she liked it. Then desert- had to do it. I was disappointed the flan wasn't ready to serve but he recommended the banana burrito with a scoop of ice cream. Very good. My friend had sopapillas and really enjoyed them. I would recommend stopping by if you are in the neighborhood.
(4)Jane N.
Mi Degollado gets two stars not because of its food, but its service. The waiter was very attentive. We didn't have to wait long to be served and our meals came out right away. My friend who went with me, is Mexican. He thought the food was o.k. but was not thrilled about the chips nor the shrimp cocktail he was served. There was a lot of liquid in the cocktail sauce and very few shrimp. He complained to the waiter but got no solution to the problem. My enchilada was a simple corn tortilla heated with some sort of white cheese and canned enchilada sauce. My friend tried the cheese in my enchilada and said, that's not right. The rice was like white rice with tomato sauce. No spices like cumin or bits of onion. Flavorless. The beans were o.k. I thought the chips were homemade, my friend disagreed. The taco was simply ground meat, no flavor and cheese on top. It tasted okay but not authentic. I was more disappointed that the enchilada was not baked.
(2)Marcia P.
This is the best Mexican food in the area by far, with great service. I had the chicken enchiladas suisas (and another version of the enchiladas which I forget now), and both featured fresh, pulled chicken, and a tasty authentic sauce. Generous portions. The salsa is very good (not spicy in my opinion as another reviewer suggested) and the cheese sauce is worth getting as well. My friends got the black bean soup and raved about it. One got the carnitas lunch which looked extremely good and I drooled over. It's also nice that they offer lunch specials on Saturday as well. They're already very affordable. The margaritas are unusually good-- I bet they must use better tequila and are generous with it, so I recommend not missing out on that. But be warned....the large is a goblet!! Definitely stop in and enjoy.
(4)Kay G.
I love this place but the ONLY reason I am giving it 3 stars is due to 3 things, their SALADS are a joke, its literally a plate with a SUPER THIN layer of mediocre lettuce with grilled chicken on top. I was NOT impressed. And also, when it comes to traditional Mexican food, they are lacking a little bit,(I am from Cali and I am Hispanic so I KNOW my Mexican food) and I'm guessing in order to "cut corners" Their portions are really skimpy, normally at a Mexican restaurant they really want to fill you up, here, you are lucky if you get full. Their rice always seems as if it was heated up from the night before in the microwave and it hardens before it comes out to the customer, another disappointment. Other than these issues, the food is GOOD, the chile verde is my favorite. Its so flavorful. Their flautas and fajitas are awesome as well. They can work on portion size and the rice, so its not so hard, but overall, I think its the best you can get in Charles Town.
(3)Nicole B.
We were greeted with a smile and seated in a comfy booth. Chips and salsa were delivered as soon as we sat down. But be warned! The salsa is spicy! It is very good, but I guess I have gotten accustomed to mild restaurant salsa. We ordered the guacamole on the side. It was a little bland in flavor, but you could tell it was fresh. Margaritas are huge and awesome! They don't skimp on the tequila. Atmosphere was acceptable. Our server was very attentive. I'm still trying to get used to living in an area that doesn't have a lot of choices. We will be back, even if it's just for margaritas.
(4)Phil Z.
Very good restaurant if you want to get your Mexican food fix. Was greeted upon entering the front doors and seated right away. Service was incredibly friendly. Food came out exceptionally fast and was delicious and filling! Overall, a great place to eat!
(5)Kelly M.
We love this place! Always fast when seating us and food is great. I'm still trying different items off the menu but haven't been disappointed with anything I've had so far. Servers are polite and friendly. Good family environment. I really don't have anything negative to share. Would recommend to friends and family.
(5)Don H.
Had great dinner last night. My chile and taco bean and rice was very tasty. staff changed channel for Belmont race. Will come again
(4)Brittny S.
Husband and I are new to the area and decided to take our rather large family (8 adults and 4kids) out to dinners here based on reviews. Wow, was I impressed. First, I personally think non chain Mexican restaurants are usually better than the big chains. The chips and salsa were yummy (I'm a sucker for fresh cilantro in salsa)...and they kept them coming. I got fajitas, which were awesome. There were no complaints from any of my family on their meals either. The main reason I rated it 5 stars, was because of the service. The place was packed and our server was excellent! Refilled all the drinks without us ever asking, super nice and friendly, and seemed like he was happy to be there (which from a former waitress...can be a challenge on a Saturday night). Will definitely be coming back and hoping for a similar experience...can't wait to try the margaritas!!
(5)Susan W.
This is your classic Mexican restaurant. In a strip mall with large, bright murals and sombreros on the walls, you can come here and get get your favorites. The prices are good, the food is fast and the service good.
(3)Lupita R.
a very friendly place to eat with the family!!! we have seen that at lunch time there is always a big croud of border patrol officers that are here for training, and they come to eat at the restaurant.
(5)Mujer B.
The food is really good the only thing I would recommend customers to do is really look at what you order and what you get. Some dinners come with fixin's like guacamole and sour cream and that's not always what you get. I've gone several times and they have charged me extra when I had asked for those things. Just saying, be careful.
(3)Alexander A.
This place was great. I've lived on the west coast most of my life which is the hotbed of mexican food. The cuisine is very authentic. Service great. I watched the lunch crowd come in and the guys just pick up the pace, offering everyone the same level of attention. Great place to pop by for your fix if you're in the area.
(4)Lisa D.
We frequently visit this restaurant and we love it! The food is always fresh and the service excellent. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is pleasant. I hope that you too enjoy it!
(5)Sarah C.
Every time we're in the area, my boyfriend and I stop by this place. The food is phenomenal; the service is excellent; the prices are right on point. Love it. A few things to note: 1) If you don't like heat, avoid the fish tacos - they are FIREY. (But toats fresh and delicious.) 2) The fajitas are enough to feed a small army. 3) The chips and salsa... mwah! So much goodness. Great local business, well deserving of your dollars.
(5)Debbie S.
Love this place! Been coming here for years and ALWAYS get fast, friendly service. Food quality and quantity is great and I highly recommend their chicken soup, it is spicy good!!!
(5)Darrell L.
I eat here all the time. Their salsa is the best I have ever had and I love their chicken soup. I have enjoyed everything that I tried on their menu and the service is great.
(5)Janet P.
I went here when this place first opened and it was really good. Then we had went back a week or so later and it went down a bit. I don't mind eatting here but I do prefer Casa Gonzalez 2 over this place and it is not much further from here.
(2)Laura C.
Service is good. Food is authentic and not bad especially for West Virginia. Price is not bad at all.
(4)Eric B.
I've been in a few times now and LOVE this place! The food is great and the staff is awesome! My favorite is the Fried Chicken Chimichangas, they are rediculously good. I've not had anything that I don't like!
(4)Catherine O.
Wow I could definitely do without the snarky West Virginia comment from that one guy, but back to the point - I really dig this place! And it's not good "for West Virginia"; it's genuinely good. Sure the outside doesn't look like much and they decor is funny/cheesy (c'mon how many Mexican restaurants do you know that don't have cheesy decor?) The folks who work there are really nice and I have yet to have anything there that I really dislike (although the margaritas were a bit on the sweet side when we had them).
(4)Julia M.
Mi Degollado is a HUGE favorite of mine, my family's, and most of our friends. I have NEVER had a bad eating experience with them, whether it was take-out or in their restaurant. The waiters there are fantastic and fast. It's a great deal for excellent food and they usually make the margaritas a little harder for us. Whenever we go, we try to speak a little Spanish with them, even though we're not fluent, and I think they appreciate the effort. They don't push you thru the meal; we've enjoyed just sitting over drinks with friends and family many a time. The decor is bright and lively and they've got incredible philodendron plants on display. The waiters there have even pulled out their own special select tequila for my father a couple times. I can't say enough about this restaurant. Much better than most of the other Mexican restaurants in the area - even Cacique in Frederick.
(5)Andy B.
This is one of my family's favorite places to eat - so much so that the staff recognizes my five year old who has been visiting Mi Degollado since he was born. The food is always delicious and the service is always very good and personable. The place is not very large and can fill to capacity pretty quickly, but the wait time is generally not that long in my experience. The prices are reasonable and the portion size is pretty generous - not to mention the free chips and salsa. If you want to add an item, I recommend the cheese dip for the chips. I highly recommend visiting Mi Degollado if you like Mexican food.
(5)Rachel M.
Camping at the KOA, this place was an awesome excursion for a meal away from the campfire. My small son was asking for a cheese quesadilla so I found this Mexican place on Yelp. So glad I did! Plenty of combo plates, free chips/salsa while you wait. If you like "real" Mexican, go for the Tacos al Pastor. Grilled and chopped steak with bits of crispy chorizo mixed in, fresh salsa...I ate my fill and then some. Our waitress was very friendly and prompt as well. Next time we camp at Harpers Ferry there is no doubt we'll be back.
(5)Matt K.
My family's favorite Mexican spot in our county. The food is always excellent and they are as friendly as can be. We hit this spot at least once a month!
(5)Kim W.
I don't understand why a reviewer dis'ed this place. All I can say is, he must have been in a different restaurant than I always go to over in Charlestown, WV... I'm a world traveler, BTW and I've hit Tex-Mex all over the country. Mi Degollados is about as good as it gets for Eastern Tex Mex, esp in West Virginia. The best is out in New Mexico or Texas, but I don't live there, ha! We go to Mi Degollado's all the time and the food is *always* fresh, delicious and plentiful. The service is fantastic (we go on Sundays). We love the place so much that we drive all the way from Hedgesville and skip the crummy Mex restaurants in Martinsburg. We've lived here for about 7 years and it took us forever to find a decent WV Mex restaurant. (We also go to Hagerstown on occasion; El Rancheros at the Mall is good, also.) NOTE: Mi Degollado's Fajita Nachos is to die for. Also, their Pechuga dish is excellent; Chicken breast, mushrooms, onions, etc with a sauce with rice. YUM!!! Mi Degollados is like family, they know us when we walk in and are quick to serve. It's a small restaurant. (And NO I don't work for them; just a customer!)
(5)Krystal T.
My family eats here once every couple of months and everytime has been a great experience. The service is attentive and the chips and salsa taste authentic. I get the Enchiladas Poblano (with mole sauce) and I think they are pretty good- however, I think compared to other Mexican restaurants, the portions are smaller, but priced the same. I've also had the fajitas which were delish. The beer is very reasonably priced and the margaritas aren't to shabby either. There is always a good crowd inside. Not my favorite Mexican restaurant in the world, but it's consistently good.
(4)Michael L.
A friend recommended this little place and the other night when we were near Charles Town we decided to stop in. We will be forever thankful for that decision. This is a modest but very real Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa were fresh. The chile rellenos were done the way they ought to be, with the right cheese and the pastry seeming to pop up instead of the usual heavy stuff one finds in many places. I had the mole pablona and it was truly delicious, not too sweet but with that just right flavor. We shared a perfect negra modela and for $20 the entire meal for two cannot be beat. The decorations are pretty basic, sort of reminiscent of a border eatery, simple, and there were plenty of local Mexicans or Central Americans in there, pretty clearly blue collar. They were loving the food and so did we. The atmosphere was friendly and the service was great.
(4)Sean W.
Great little Mexican Food place in Charles town. Always very friendly and the food is excellent.
(5)A R.
The place is just "OK" - nothing great about it or the food. Salsa is very spicy. Price is reasonable. Service was pretty good. We each had a meal, a Stella, and a Diet coke - total was around $28. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again - next time we're in the area we'll try somewhere else. In strip mall between Mezzaluna and Aaron's Rents.
(3)Tony S.
I'm from California and know a little about Mexican food. This is legit. From the clean non greasy food, to the powdery flour tortillas and the home made chips this is food like my Nana once cooked. I didn't expect to find this place in West Virginia, but I'm glad I did. When I get homesick back east I come here for some "comfort food". Try the Bistek and a michelada. Even just a regular combo is outstanding.
(5)Steven R.
My 8 year old son's favorite restaurant in the world. They know us by name here now, from eating lunch and dinner once a week. Very nice service and you can always watch an old soccer game which I think reruns on the TV. Jk
(5)Mark W.
Great Mexican food at reasonable prices! Portions are also very generous. Most of the time I am not able to finish my meal at the restaurant. Most of other restaurants I do finish. Every time I've gone there during regular dinner hours, they've always been busy. Wait staff is always friendly. Tortilla chips and salsa are great and plentiful.
(5)David F.
If a Mexican restaurant serves sour cream on anything, turn around and walk the eff out. That's not Mexican food that's el stupido gringo food.
(2)Sondra K.
This place is disgusting. Absolutely, disgusting. They start you off with chips and salsa, very very greasy chips. I ordered carne Asada wgich is supposed to be grilled steak. What I got was paper thin slices of bottom roast fried in grease. It tasted old. It was a funny color brown funny taste super tough and swimming in grease. YUCK. Beans were canned, rice was instant, and that about sums it up. The other order at the table was huevos rancheros, which is supposed to be eggs with a tomato sauce. It tasted and looked literally like someone threw up on the plate and brought it to the table. Might want to skip this place. Even if you're starving to death.
